QUT management’s decision to sack 21 science staff has hit the local media. On Wednesday, 22 October, Dr David Murphy was interviewed by Steve Austin on ABC Mornings about QUT’s plans (around 25 minutes into the recording). Mr Austin noted that QUT’s proposal appeared to be at odds with the recent rare earths deal signed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Donald Trump. Ultimately, this could have implications for Australia’s sovereignty.
Grace Koo from The Courier-Mail also reported on the forced redundancies. Ms Koo interviewed Dr Murphy, Michael McNally from the National Tertiary Education Union (Queensland), and an unnamed “QUT source.” Dr Murphy and Mr McNally discussed the potential impact on students. The unnamed “QUT source” stated, “Students currently enrolled in courses delivered by the Faculty of Science will not be impacted.”
Hmmmm…
