The QUT Rally Against Redundancies was a resounding success, with an estimated 250–300 staff, students, and supporters gathering around the iconic Bunya Pine on Kidney Lawn to show their support for QUT Science.
The event was MCed by NTEU representative Erin Campbell and began with a Welcome to Country delivered by Dr Katrina Wruck, Young Australian of the Year, QUT alumnus, and staff member.
Dr David Murphy delivered an impassioned address, describing how the current situation is out of step with QUT’s proud tradition of supporting scientific research and education. The rally concluded with remarks from QUT Guild Education Officer, Georgie Dobbs, who spoke passionately about the impact of the proposed redundancies on students and the future of science at QUT.
Following the speeches, the crowd marched to the Chancellery Building, standing on the steps to visibly demonstrate their commitment to protecting science at QUT.
The strong turnout and positive energy reflected the deep concern across the university community about the future of science at QUT — and the shared determination to ensure that the voices of staff and students are heard.t.
